DOE/National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) SG-100, Packaging and Offsite Transportation of Nuclear Material—Workshop (4–5 days)

Description: Development guide for packaging and offsite transportation of nuclear components, special assemblies, and radioactive materials associated with the nuclear explosives and weapons safety program.

Modules (related to Safety Analysis Report for Packaging [SARP] format) include the following.

  • Historical perspective of transportation regulations
  • SG-400 (quality assurance)
  • General aspects (chapter 1)
  • Structural aspects (chapter 2)
  • Thermal aspects (chapter 3)
  • Containment aspects (chapter 4)
  • Shielding aspects (chapter 5)
  • Criticality aspects (chapter 6)
  • Operational aspects (chapter 7)
  • Acceptance and maintenance aspects (chapter 8)
  • Materials and QA (chapter 9)

DOE/NNSA SG-600, Test Guide for Type B Packages—Workshop (1 day)

Description: Presentations on how to perform tests of Type B packages as part of package design certification.

Target audience: DOE and NNSA packaging and transportation community.

DOE/NNSA Packaging Workshop (3 days)

Description: Workshop held periodically for NNSA packaging community. Typical format includes panel discussions on regulations and policies; presentations on safety guides and consensus standards, SARP preparation, SG-100 and SG-600 (overviews), and transportation system risk assessments; and demonstrations on topics such as leak testing and packaging operations.

Target audience: DOE and NNSA packaging and transportation community.

Security in the Transport of Radioactive Material—Workshop (3–5 days, depending on audience needs)

Description: Course developed cooperatively by the NNSA Office of Global Threat Reduction (NA-21), ORNL, and IAEA; complies with the IAEA Nuclear Security Series No. 9, Implementing Guide. This course has been given in Beijing, China (May 2007, December 2007) and Lagos, Nigeria (November 2008). Additional offerings are being planned (in support of NA-21) in Kiev, Ukraine (November 2008) and the Philippines (Jan or Feb 2009).
